What network hashrate means
Network hashrate is the combined speed at which every mining machine in the world is guessing SHA-256 hashes to find the next Bitcoin block. It is measured in exahashes per second: one EH/s is a billion billion hashes every second. The number cannot be observed directly, so it is inferred from the current difficulty and how fast blocks arrive.
Hashrate follows mining economics. When the Bitcoin price or transaction fees rise, hashprice improves, idle machines are switched back on, and hashrate grows. When margins compress, the least efficient hardware shuts down. Over the long run the trend has been relentlessly upward as each ASIC generation delivers more hashes per joule.

What is the Bitcoin network hashrate right now?
The live figure at the top of this page shows the current estimate in exahashes per second (EH/s), derived from the network difficulty. One EH/s is one quintillion (10^18) SHA-256 hashes computed every second.
How is network hashrate measured?
It cannot be measured directly. It is estimated from the current difficulty and the rate at which blocks are found: hashrate equals difficulty times 2^32 divided by the 600 second block target. Short-term readings are noisy because block discovery is random.
Why does a higher hashrate make Bitcoin more secure?
To rewrite recent history an attacker needs more than half of the network hashrate. At hundreds of EH/s that requires millions of latest-generation ASICs and gigawatts of power, making a 51% attack economically irrational.
Does more hashrate mean more Bitcoin is mined?
No. The protocol keeps issuance fixed at about 144 blocks and 450 BTC of subsidy per day regardless of hashrate. More hashrate just spreads the same reward across more machines, which is why per-machine revenue (hashprice) falls as hashrate grows.
